Founded in 1858 by Australian immigrant Philip Robinson and James Gaborian Spicer, Robinsons initially sold food items, as well as women's hats and dressmaking materials. By 1881, the store had become a hub for the European community in Singapore; it also attracted customers from neighbouring Malaysia, Borneo and Thailand. In the 1940s, Robinsons expanded its offer to include men’s and women’s apparel, leather goods, confectionery, silverware, bedding and more. Post-war, the brand expanded its retail footprint in Singapore, and in the 1970s, it expanded its operations into Malaysia.
